Winter Season

During this period the botargas (clown-like figure) can be seen, traditionally in the Alcarria and Ocejón (Guadalajara) mountainous regions. Caro Baroja, in an article published in 1965, believed that the "botarga" figure, so typically Castilian and so at home in these cold, arid highlands, has nevertheless, in my opinion medieval, European roots which are plain to see. This character takes part in the Festival of the Lost Child in Valdenuño Fernández (Guadalajara), the Sunday after the Epiphany. The figure is represented by a youth, dressed in a multicoloured costume, a belt with small bells, a mask and coloured cap, and a large castanet. He is armed with a large stick, used for chasing after the children.
